Default Eastern State Penitentiary Zoom Blur

    Attached Images Attached Images

For this image I used a Photoshop zoom blur effect. With a layer mask I revealed a bit of the details. I also used the “soft light” blend mode in Photoshop. For me the image has kind of an ethereal quality to it. Anyone wishing to see the B&W version you can visit my blog.

Denise, Like this a lot. It's amazing how one can introduce a feeling into an image by "crafting" techniques. The zoom blur, wasn't jazzing me initally, until I looked at it a bit more. Now it feels compelling, as if an inmate were walking into this cell for the first time. For what might seem an impending existence reduced to a small square of space and enormous time. I can almost see a diabolical face (the green eye on the right) greeting the inmate. Well done! Love the preservation of details in the rear of the cell.

Utter despair. That's the first thought that crossed my mind. Can you imagine being an inmate and looking in at that cell? Nothing is soft or inviting...stone staring out from the decaying wall...iron slats that form the support for you bed...a bleakly stark interior that offers nothing in the sense of hope. A very powerful and disturbing image..nicely done!

Oh my gosh. Such emotion here. This is really an incredible image, Denise. Stark, desperate, scary place.

Hi Denise, I love the zoom blur on this one. Looks like it could have been a solitary confinement cell.

Great job on the zoom blur, Denise. It really adds so much to the mood of the image. Wonderful light captured as well. Looks like it could be a special effect still from a horror movie.

    Thanks folks, I appreciate it.
Jay, I know what you mean about the zoom-at first I thought OK then as I started to look at it I decided to decrease the zoom in places and force the lines of the bed and walls to pull you in.
John, You are killing me with these names-Utter Despair, I think I'll rename this one too!
Maureen, You summed up the image very nicely. thanks.
Andrew, I wonder if it was solitary confinement.
Brendan, I wish it were a special effect for a movie

    Interesting image and application, Denise.

Would agree with John. Not a place I want to visit or reside.

How long were you in there?

Mark, Approx 4 hours. The prison is very large and there are many sites to see inside.

Hi Denise, this image really pops out at me, and I like the placement of the bed in the frame. Just enough zoom blur to work for me. Well done.

Hi Denise....Love your zoom technique...I will try to remember to try it......I have been to ESP and it is indeed a scary and I thought a depressing place....You might consider darkening the whole picture to create more of that mood

Denise, this image puts your work on a new level IMO. This is truly the art of photography.

Thanks Bob and Kerry, I appreciate it.
Bob, I did some versions that were a bit darker and I will put the whole series on my blog soon. Thanks.

Denise, this is a masterpiece. There is so much emotion conveyed and I think the zoom enhances that. This would be a very powerful place to visit and the feelings invoked are very evident in this image. I especially like the shadows of the slats under the bed and the soft almost heavenly feel from the light shining in which is probably the opposite of the way you would feel if this was going to be where you had to have to live. The touches of green really add to the image. Great work

Hi Denise. Powerful, macabre, chilling... a fate worse than death, and the ultimate nightmare for one who thrives on wild landscapes!
The image is brilliant in its ostensible simplicity, execution, and technique. Wow!

John, You have such a way with words. Thank you for the kind comments. I have really enjoyed showing a more intimate look at the prison. I am flooded with ideas and can't wait to get back there...
