    Default Chuparosa

Hi guys, back from three days in the mountains trying (again) to get White-headed Woodpecker and Steller's Jay shots. Not so much luck (again) with that, but I did see some nice flowers, including this chuparosa, which is also known as "hummingbird". The little rufous hummingbirds were buzzing around these flowers all day.

Topaz Detail and Adjust were used.

Now to the theme part! There are lots of geometrical elements in this image, especially triangles.

Gorgeous bloom, Kerry; nice strong diagonal line through the image...I love the wispy, curvy strands coming from the plant...the BG creates separation and adds some "pop" to the colors...and the semi-translucent red in the petals of the bloom is stunning. Well done!

Kerry, Not exactly what you went in search of but I would say it was worth the trip! Lovely bloom and the black BG really sets it off. I like the delicate stem. I might be tempted to crop just under your sig and then clean up the remnants but either way a great looking image.

The colors glow against that dark bg. (How did you get that black?) Nice presentation. I would be inclined to crop all around so the flower doesn't look so small in the frame. Must have been lovely to see hummingbirds!

Beautiful composition, Kerry. The flower does standout in the dark background. I also like the diagonal line of the stem. Nicely done.

Way to take advantage of what's available out in the field, Kerry. Great looking flower, and love how the light hits the bloom and stem, nicely composed with diagonal and black BG.

Thanks for comments, much appreciated! Anita, I look for situations like this, where the subject is in full light but the background is shadow. A simple levels adjustment makes the already dark background drop out completely. It's a very simple technique that we will talk about in an upcoming theme!
