I am unfamiliar with purple finches and thus confused by the markings on the upper bird at this feeder. It has a bit of yellow on its head, and the breast streaks look finer-not as bold as on the bird below. Image made on 7/16/11 at Hog Island Audubon Camp in Bremen, Maine.

The large head and bill make them both look good for Purple Finch to me. Top one looks like a female while the bottom one, showing hints of red in the plumage, is perhaps a young male molting into its "raspberry" plumage.

I agree with the ID as Purple Finch for both birds. Although it's tough for me to see, it does appear that some of the male's adult coloring is starting to come in near the dark mark bordering the throat. This is often where I see the first signs of color in young male Purple Finches that visit my feeders in the winter.
