Trying for an aged, still life painting look. Image taken with natural window light and a bit of pop-up flash. Used Topaz Simplify, Pixel Bender Oil, then after reviewing Hilary & Christopher's tutorials added two textures. Tried different blending modes and I think I ended up using the normal and color dodge modes.

Brendan, Classic shot. Great use of filters. PB applied quite well, just enough effect. Love the light and muted tones.......the textures just top this off. Nice work.

Brendan, I have echo Jay's comment..it is a classic shot. I like the textures you've applied..they enhance the sense of depth and add a texture very much like you might see from the strokes of a brush...great job rendering the color tones without losing some of the natural details and highlights of the fruit...I like the line from the counter/table as it runs beneath the bowl; I wish there was one more element, something to add an anchor point to one side perhaps...or a simple linen table cloth..a knife...a piece of fruit out of the bowel...just thinking out loud. Nice work!

Brendan, Nice work with the filtering. John makes a great suggestion. I think that the texturing work looks natural. Nice job!

This is very nice Brendan, I think your combination of filters has worked very well. John makes a good suggestion about adding something extra, many of the classic still life paintings include an extra piece in them. My first thought when I saw the image was that if I were painting it I would add a touch more shadow to bring out the 3 dimensionality of the bowl. Easy enough to do in PS, using a burn/dodge layer mask and painting with a soft, broad brush at about 12% would achieve a soft, realistic look.

Look forward to some more still life images.

Wonderful job of processing, Brendan. Your light and texture are so appealing. So much fun reading the suggestions. I actually had noticed the table seam and thought it added a nice element to the bottom edge. In the spirit of more brainstorming about another element... how about the top spindles of a wooden chair back?

You guys read my mind, after I posted, I was thinking it did need some extra elements, like a salt shaker, a loaf of bread, or linen cloth or knife as John suggested. And Steve, I actually did shoot some shots with a wooden chair in the background, but didn't like how they came out. Think more elements would definitely add some interest, but I'm glad for the positive feedback on the look and filtering. Hilary, great advice and great tips, I will give a try at your suggestion - your work was definitely an inspiration for trying something like this.

    Hey Brendan,
Looks like an old masters painting!!! I would be tempted to go a tiny smidge brighter......but this is fantastic!
