    Default Black-headed Trogon

Here's one from Costa Rica last March that I never posted -- maybe out of fear of the HAP, and a little noise due to the high ISO, but I still like it. Cropped from horizontal.

Lovely colours Bill! IQ doesn't seem as bad as you make it sound
Always nice to capture decent photos of birds we don't/won't get to see often.

Bill, nice backside shot of him. The HA is what it is, but not that bad, still a very nice capture. Lots of detail in the image. Thanks for posting it.

The trogon has great detail & color and the ISO is not really an issue for me. I really like the bkgd colors and the graceful tendrils as they add to the tropical feeling and none intersect the bird.

I like all your choices, Bill: keeping the speed rather high (1/1000) because you were holding the camera, which meant upping your ISO to 3200, which, as it turns out, was not a problem at all. Noise is not the problem that I see in this image. The problem is, as you noted, head angle, plus a busy environment, especially the perch, which seems to be poking me in the eye. Still, an extraordinary bird, and certainly an image to keep, and to build on.

Nothing worng with the IQ Bill, the noise is a non issue in this image. HA, on the other hand.... Good vertical composition, BG a little busy, but the dense forests don't always allow for clean unobstructed settings. Good colours and details.

Thank you all for the comments. Yes, I know the HA is a problem. I have some others of this species with better HA that I haven't yet processed, but I liked the comp of this one, and like Nancy, I liked the tendrils that added to the tropical forest feeling. On my screen I'm seeing a little noise in the yellow belly area, but maybe not too bad for 3200 ISO.

Bill, beautiful bird and your shot does full justice. terrific colors and I like the bokeh. The perch coming towards the viewer is an issue but am sure there wasn't much you could've done. its a rainforest. Photographing one at this close distance must have been thrilling.

Thanks Kaustubh. Yes, photographing in Costa Rica is just one thrill after another, easily outweighing the frustrations of low light and busy BGs. Would love to go back.

Bill, I have lived for some time in Arizona and grew up in India. never ever got close to a Trogon. Costa Rica must be quite amazing.
