Richard, I am afraid this image does not work for me. Looks like you were in a difficult spot with that shooting angle and BG. Critical focus seems to be behind the bird. Hopefully, you'll get more opportunities.

Sixty feet distant, handheld , centre spot on eye, thats hard handheld and manual focus lol

I cant use 7D new spangly auto focus with the TC on

angle and BG the way nature built em; pity some human put a concrete block there, so agree not the best of BG lol

    Hi Richard,
I am with Kaustubh on this one. There is too much on the right side of the bird and the bird is soft. I think you would have been better off taking the 1.4 converter off, losing the extra distance but getting a sharper picture. Your image could then withstand a big crop and the IQ would hold up,

YEP converter can be a big negative, especially as auto focus is very poor even on centre spot, actually seems worse than on my 40D. When I go back I will run some without it if he turns up again. I think its a male as there is no red on lower mandible.
Thank you both for your critiques

I have further shots like this.
As this is the same bird, place and time hope the mods will allow me to post him from a different angle as here.
    any better for you ?
