Default Gannet close fly by head shot

Years ago, I saw Chaz Glatzer jump for joy at Bosque when he made a head shot full frame on a flying sandhill crane. I felt the same way when I got this full fame, uncropped, image of a close flying gannet at Cape St Mary, Newfoundland after many tries. Jumping was frowned on due to the proximity of the cliffs, I was about 3 feet from an interesting flight if there was a slip.. Shooting with Manual was chancy due to the changing sun angles as the gannets flew.
What a wonderful place and wonderful opportunity, opportunity to carry 45 to 50 pounds of camera gear on irregular trails to the cliffs also.

    Steve:

Always fun to capture a shot you have been imagining for years.

Glad you didn't jump to far!

This a challenging one from an exposure standpoint, with the back in full sun and the head shadowed.

I might try a combined raw conversion with the back and head converted at different exposure settings, and then combine them.

The head is angled away a bit, and there is a small halo around the bill.

Hope to see more from your trip.

    Cheers

    Steve,

This is cool head shot. I have never notice the fine eye of a gannet before

Congratulation on an excellent job with the full frame head shot of flying bird, not an easy thing to do at all. I would jump with joy too :D
Agree about trying to combine different exposure setting with RAW and the halo around the bird.

Looks to me like your exposure was right on, with great detail and no blowout on the back. Fabulous shot well taken. Agree about working up a little more light on the face and chasing down the halo.

Congrats on getting a full-frame portrait of a flying bird!! I just wish the head wasn't angled away and that it was better lit. Still, very sharp and the in-camera composition looks great!
