Canon MT24 and 550EX flash and 100mm L IS questions
Hi all,
I've just started to get into macro photography, and have a few questions concerning the use of the MT24 and 550EX flash setups. What set up and brackets/mounts are users choosing? Are people using them togather? What are people using to diffuse the MT24 and what cheap box-type diffuser works well with the 550EX? I have just received the new 100mm L IS f2.8 so will be using the MT24 with this to get used to it. I'd be keen to hear of other users experiences, tips, tricks. I will be using on the 1D MkIV.
Thanks,
Brent
Unless you are shooting macro subjects at close working distance you will not be able to move the twin lights off lens axis enough to create lighting ratios and subject modeling without a bracket.
The RRS bracket system provides superb flexibility with regard to proper positioning of the lights for both close up and macro subjects. With a few extras you can even use 2 550EX strobes when additional output is necessary.
Velum can be used to diffuse the twin lights. Lumiquest, Photoflex, Apollo, and others make small soft boxes for speedlights.

Thanks for the response. I ended up ordering a couple of the Gary Fong popup diffusers and will attach them directly to the flash heads. I'll see how I go with the lens mount, and if need be go for a Wimberley or RRS flash bracket alternative. As I already own a bit of Wimberley gear I may end up going for that unless I hear good arguments as to other alternatives.
