Since this is the time of the year that hummers are especially active in my part of the country, I have been shooting them almost every day. This one I took late yesterday afternoon without the aid of a flash. I am anxious to discover how you all feel about it. Shooting data follows:

    Flash: Off
    File size: 48.4MB
    Image size: 1545 x 1236

Wheeler, the pose you got here is very nice, and looks like you nailed the focus (but the image is oversharpened as presented). I also find the subject rather large in the frame plus it is tucked pretty close to the left. I'd take care of the noise (which was no doubt accentuated by your aggressive sharpening) and also tone down the bright patch near the neck. A bit more TLC in the processing and you'll have a winner with this image.

Thanks for your thoughts on this image. First I agree with you that the bird was over sharpened, but what I don't understand is your comment on noise as I did not sharpen anything but the bird, as I almost never sharpen the BG. I also agree with you concerning the white patch on the shoulder of the bird. I have posted a repost with your sugestions. I did not sharpen anything except the eye of the bird. The reason that I am so puzeled about the noise is ongoing. As you can see I am using a Nikon D3S and ISO of 800., the camera sould be able to handle this ISO with no trouble, but I get beat up quite frequently regarding noise. Thanks again for your thoughts as they are very helpful in improving my photography.

I like the second image much better. In the first image, the noise I see is in the right wing.

    You're welcome!

    Repost is alot better Wheeler!

I'm not familiar with the results of Nikon, but sometimes what looks like a lack of noise is accentuated by heavy cropping and / or aggressive sharpening. Perhaps this is what happened on your image (notice the difference on the wing).
