These guys are surprising fast for their size. I have many more rear end shots that others. This one decided not to land when he saw me so was going from landing speed to afterburner. Just the advantage I needed.

Canon Mark IV, 70-200 f 2.8 2x, 400mm, 1/3200 f5.6 +1/3, AP, ISO 800, Hand Held, cropped 40% for composition. NIk noise and sharping. Some dodging and burning with 50% gray overlay layer in PS. Other adjustments in Lightroom.

If these guys are like their Atlantic counterparts, they are little bullets. Congrats on getting such a good flight shot. Love the downwing position and the head clear. BG is a little blotchy and the grey object on the right doesn't improve the image IMHO, but still very fine.

pose is very dynamic and nice, BG is a bit distracting and details are a bit soft however.

Very cool flight capture of this Puffin, Tommy. Good exposure, even light across bird and colors look great! Good suggestions above.

The background is a problem. It is composed of a gray, rocky cliff where the puffins are nesting intermixed with floral growths. A lot of my shots of puffins suffer similarly. I blurred the background some, but I hesitated in going further, thinking it would be a turn off. I think the IQ is enough to do some more sharpening and I'll try that to increase the detail. The crop was pretty equal on all four sides and was more for positioning than increasing the subject's size. Thanks for the suggestions and help. As most of you know, I am newbie and your help is most appreciated. It does make a big difference.

Sharp with perfect EXP and killer wing position. As Arash said, the BKGR being so proximal is a problem. Where and when?

Thanks Artie. I am trying. The background was tough from every angle.

I am not sure exactly where, but it was on July 15 on the island rookery that Silver Salmon Lodge goes to. Its about a 45 minute boat ride. I made three trips. On the first trip, the weather was bad and the water was so rough we could not land. A bouncing boat did help with a lot of good flight shots. On the second trip the weather was great, but the puffins where at sea so only a few nesting images. But the third time was a charm. Puffins everywhere. I have several images with six or more puffins in the frame. The tide was in so only a small beach area. I just couldn't get away from the rocky cliff background.
