Hi everyone... I've played with a couple crops for this image, and think a square format works best, and would be curious to hear others opinions. This is cropped from a horizontal capture, where I didn't have enough room to the right to go to a horizontal format. I liked a vertical as well, but the tail was off frame when cropping more on the right, etc.
I found this guy this past spring along the Jordan River here in northern Utah.

Thanks,

Nicely captured, with a good look-back pose. I like the comp, but not being a great fan of square crops, I might have been tempted to add just a bit on the bottom and top, if you have it, to make it somewhat vertical. I wouldn't take any off the right it it were me.
John, I agree with Bill on the comp. I dont mind square but this one can work with some more room above and a tad below to balance that. Look back pose is excellent. ...so is the shooting angle. You stopped down well to get the FG twigs somewhat sharp but they still distract the view a bit IMO. Details look a little soft...a round of USM on the bird might help.
The crop works for me. Like the exposure, lighting and framing from twigs. In a perfect world, would prefer that the twigs didn't overlap onto the body so much, but it is still very effective for me.
I agree with KD, a bit more sharpening on the bird might help it pop even more.
I liked the thumbnail, and the full size image even better.
