Thanks all for the great tips yesterday. Today evening I went back to Fermi and I don't know what was different but this guy kept walking almost at a hand holding distance so much so that he was well within MFD :( All the while he was swallowing tiny frogs and smelled nasty ! :(

Followed some of the tips from Artie's DB to PP....

    7D, 400/5.6L @ f/5.6, 1/160, ISO 1000

A well fed bird may dominate its competitors for breeding opportunities around the corner. Evidently very low light conditions based on the shooting data. With the bird so close, you wouldn't need the fresnel lens for even a bit more than fill flash. Wouldn't object to your significantly blurring the background with a NR technique. I don't think the bird itself would smell nasty, but perhaps the muck it may have been stirring up.

Thanks Bob. I actually go every day in a quest to get perfect at shooting the GWE's. There are 4 of them there. So I usually lay down on the grass with the 400 on a gorrilla pod, but today this guy would not just walk away from me even though I changed positions twice. May be I was smelling like fish

The light was not bad but Auto ISO was pushing it to 3200 for everything. So I chose ISO 1000 and dropped SS till I got the hist to the middle. I think I dialed in +1 EC too.

Thanks for the additional relevant technical and observational detail. I don't allow cameras to make ISO decisions for me. The latest cameras available such as yours handle high ISO well, though my reference to the NR technique was made to perhaps enhance your image to your liking by simply blurring the background.

In photoshop I chose Filter >> Noise >> Basic >> Strength 10 >> Preserve Details 0 >> Reduce Color Noise 45% >> Sharpen Details 0% and applied this to your image twice after outlining the bird with the Lasso Tool. I don't use this technique but very rarely and never to such an extreme. I merely considered the vegetation much too close to the bird.

Always include your EC in your shooting data. As you surely know, increasing your exposure compensation slows your shutter speed and hence the occasional benefit of flash.

Nice bird, composition and head angle, Shreeni. Nice of him to pose for you.
Did you run NR on the bird? Details seem to be softened a bit?

Nice close-up and great looking bird, Shreeni. Good suggestions above.

Thanks Bob. I will keep this in mind when I go today.

Sidharth - Just a little bit on the background. But I think the picture has become a victim of focus-recompose error. Since this bird was so close I focused on the eye and then re-oriented the camera to an odd angle to get some of the lower neck. Hence I guess it is kind of out of focus near the neck and below ?

The bird looks plenty sharp to me in each version. And I rather like the image design, the BKGR, and the light. BTW, welcome and thanks a stack for your membership support.

Thank you Artie. It means so much much to me.

Have been shooting 7D for a long time but rarely outdoors :) and never read the manual or cared about the features till I tried some avian photography and then read your super 7D PDF. I has been a god send for me.
