    Default Ruby-throated Hummingbird

While having my morning coffee on the deck at the cottage, I shot many frames of the ruby-throated hummingbirds that were coming into the feeders. The base image here is not in sharp focus, but it is the best flight pose I shot, so I thought I would try applying a heavy contrast mask and then Fractalius to it to see what I came up with. Do you think it works?

    Look forward to comments.

I love the effects and the look and the perfect wing position. I would probably work on this to make the area immediately behind the bill look more natural--it looks almost grotesquely swollen there.... I like the cracked paint BKGR too.

Andrew, this definitely works for me...I really like the subtle, almost iridescent colors in the wings...the filtering effect you used from Fractalius works very well with this image. The textured BG compliments the rest of the image...nicely done!

    Thanks guys for the comments.

Arthur, I'll take another look at the original tomorrow and check the area you mention, as I now see what you are seeing and now it looks bothersome to me.

Andrew, Killer capture and processing is lovely. Artie makes a good suggestion to improve this beauty!

Andrew, count me in on Art's suggestion. Love the wing position. Classic shot, with lovely colored BG to compliment the processing.

Nice composition and frac work, Andrew, and great looking base image of this hummer. Have to pile on regarding Art's suggestion, just a bit more tweaking to take it over the top!

Thanks everyone for the comments. I went back and looked at all my hummingbird shots from last week and this male does have a 'swollen' area right behind the bill. Perhaps it has a problem or infection of some kind?

Here is a repost after working on the area to make it look normal. Hope it works. Thanks again for all the comments.

Dear Dr Andrew, You did a fine job of curing the bird's infection! Love the repost.
