Is the star rating on this forum done automatically (based on a number of views/comments/other?) as well as by members. Seems there there are lots of stars...not that they are not deserved!

No, the star rating should be done by the visitor. You can vote only once.

It's all user based. Hopefully nobody is in love with that feature, because we're planning on removing it from the critique galleries. It's a little distracting, and it's not easy (or perhaps fair) to rate an image on 1 to 5 stars.
