Default White Tail Kite takes flight

Hello all! Its been a while since I've been here. Life keeps getting in the way!

This image was taken at Don Edwards Wildlife Refuge in Alviso, CA late in the afternoon around 6PM. Shot with a Canon 7D + 500mm + 1.4TC from my car window. 1/1600s, f/7.1, Shutter Priority, ISO400, distance to subject just over 30 feet.

For 30 feet away and 1/1600, iso 400, I would have thought it would be sharper.
You must have had some motion blur.
Great BG, and a really good pose.

Nice isolation of focus on the eye superbly lit. Appears very slightly too tight in the frame at right.

Thanks Bob! I'll center a tad more if its a bit too tight to the right.

I like the composition as is. Beautiful bird. I like the diagonal position. Sweet light.

Conrad, add a tad more room on the upper right would enhance it. Just like the one posted in F&M.

I love this image, Conrad. I wish I had been there with you when you took this shot.
I agree about adding more room to the right. I would also increase the exposure a little (0.3 EV)
since the whites look a little gray on my screen (75% on lightroom).

Oh go fly a kite C man!!

Good to see you here. I always enjoy seeing your kite images since we do not have any to photograph here.

The BG is awesome, it compliments the kite nicely. He is giving you a nice look. I agree a little more room on the right would enhance this image.

    Hi Conrad,

I like this image a lot. I like that the bird is fling toward the viewer, The background has just enough detail to provide a hint of the environment without being distractive. I am fine with the composition as presented I like how the bird creates a diagonal with the wing point to the corner of the frame. I agree with Luis that brightening it up some might be something to consider. To show you what I was thinking, in photoshop, I used a curves layer and using the adjustment tool I dragged the up the whites. I also went into selective colors and subtracted a few points of black from the whites. I will leave it up to on whether these adjustments are an enhancement. Your image your vision. Thanks for sharing a lovely image.

    Regards,

    Phil

I like Phil's repost. That's what I had in mind regarding exposure.
Also, regarding the distance, I checked the EXIF on the original image and it says it was shot from 45m (maybe @30ft it would have been hard to fit the bird in the frame)...
Still, I am impressed that you were able to get the shots from the right window of your car. I would have missed them for sure.
