Nice pose and setup, Jack, the flower is really nice and I like the muted colors of the female.
I would maybe just soften it a tad.

    Jack:

The flower is a very nice touch and its position in the frame, as well as the leaves. I wondered about cleaning up the spots on the leaves, but perhaps that is the normal coloration for this plant.

Nice look back pose, well exposed.

The perch is pretty massive for a setup and tends to overpower the bird, although the flower does soften it some.

Not a great fan of the very bright band in the upper background, would prefer a more evenly colored BG

Perhaps a little more room at the top.

I do like the lines of the perch sloping down from the bird to the flower.

Overall the image has a nice feel to it, just some thoughts to consider because it is a setup and you can control some of these elements.

    Cheers

Jack, Randy has made some very good points here. I agree the perch overpowers the bird in this image because our eyes are drawn to the flower competing with the bird.

I would be tempted to add more on top and cut out a large portion of the bottom.

Great pose on your cardinal, it must be fun to set this up and watch them

I agree with the above Jack, I really think the perch would work for a slightly larger bird. Nice and sharp!!

Please let us know if this is a set-up. Thanks. I love everything about the image except for the big light green strip of BKGR. Nice HA for the over-the-shoulder post.

Thanks Jack. We ask that whenever you post set-up images that you simply let folks know. Experienced photographers will look at images like this and be fairly certain that they are set-ups but many beginners will look at them and think, "Is this guy lucky or what? Why don't I come across situations like that?"

I do love the simplicity of this set-up. Can you do anything about the light green portion of the BKGR? (I mean with the set-up.)

Thanks Arthur, I do move these set-ups around, I have very large old growth trees all over my yard and the light on the background and on the subjects changes constantly. On this shot the sun had poked through the trees and lit that part of the bg. It looked alright to me until I read the critiques. Now when I look at the image that bright band is all I can see. Attention to detail! I apprecitate everyones' input.
Also 'setup' was the first word I typed in my discription of this post. Thanks

    Jack

Been there, done that. Sorry for missing the set-up notation :). Much appreciated.
