    Default Lesser Yellowlegs.

A couple of weeks ago I shared a photo of a stretching Lesser Yellolegs, well here's another one from this past weekend! This one has chosen a better perch too and a more soothing BG. I had some images in the series at full stretch, but with the head looking away...this one, despite having a past-peak pose, has a stronger connection to the viewer with a better head angle so for me it is better than the full-peak stretch images of the series. Always little things to consider when culling images from a morning session!

Canon 7D + 10-400L @400mm, aperture priority, evaluative metering, 1/640s., f/6.3, ISO 400, -0.3 EC, natural light, handheld with chin in the muck (I need a right angle viewer!!), about 75% FF, some debris in the water cloned/patched out, and the brighter highlights in the background toned down via burn tool.

Great shot with a wonderful pose to boot... With his foot mounted into the rock it gives the impression that he is part of the rock, kinda like a statue.

    Great job on this image.

Great pose, excellent exposure, and you have done a good job with the background.

You are producing some really great images with the 7D. they are particularly clear and crisp with great colours. I know that your images before were great, so the photographer is clearly a major factor, but would you care to divulge something of your 7D workflow?

Dan, tack, tack sharp, and I like angled pose and stretch. How calm is that water to create that perfect reflection. Killer BG too.

Lovely image! Sharp with excellent detail, nice pose and habitat. The only thing that slightly bothers me is the un-naturally sharp eye. I think that when an image is sharp there is usually no need to sharpen the eye more than the whole bird as it looks strange as in this case IMHO.

This is awesome Daniel. I love the brightness of image. Tack sharp as usual and great light. I like the pose and the perch. I wish this was mine

Do you like the sharpness of the 100-4000 at 400mm. I find that ( often) I am not tack sharp at 400mm and try to stay at 375-400. Problem is I don't know if the problem is me or the lens!!

Hi Gail, never owned the 100-400 but I have heard that there is an issue with sharpness in some of the copies. Some are sharp like Daniel's and some aren't. I am sure people who own this lens could add to this.

Hi Gail, thanks! I have no issues with my lens, love it to death including the sharpness. I also heard about the variation in sharpness in different 1-4 lenses...this is the only one I've owned so I can't say for sure. You do indictate that it is "often" not tack sharp rather than "always"...so I assume you do get perfectly sharp results once in a while...if so I'd say it is more user error than the lens...I don't think optics can be good sometimes and not other times from the same individual lens.

Perhaps it is slightly front or back focussing and sometimes you moving ever so slightly back and forth while handholding gives it that once in a while sharpness. Your best bet would be to test it on a sturdy tripod (with IS off) just to make sure.

Wow, the BG is really nice with the vertical patterns.
The pose and placement is perfect.
The eye does not look over sharpened to me, or at least, I can't see it.
As usual, your processing looks so smooth and crisp.
The rock is so perfect, it looks like a prop.

HA perfect. Love the upper wing detail. Bummer that the bird did not land on top of the rock....

    Daniel:

Lots of nice tech. details, colors, pose. I really like the composition, combination of masses and lines works really well for me on this one. I think this would appeal to lots of folks, even if they weren't interested in birds.

    Cheers

Love the bird and the rock...But I find the "banding" of the background distracting.
Maybe the BG could be blurred a bit more in post to even it out some....
