    Hi

Im a Slaty Flowerpiercer and I like to eat flowers - yum

I am really fond of these Leonitis blooms. I dont show myself very often, as most of the time I run around inside the hedge, but just for you, I
thought I'd let you get one picture.

Taken at Finca Lerida, Chiriqui, Western Panama
Hope you like, thought it most appropriate to keep a lot of these lovely flowers in the shot; these guys are very fast
and inconspicuously go about their feeding. The bill is totally adapted to ripping open the base of the flowers.

    Richard,

Looks like you could bring down the brightness a little to tone down the leaf shine. Would have been nicer if the bird tilted his head more towards you instead of looking up. Like the comp, but would definately crop from left and bottom, and a bit of the top.
The image is very noisy, and applying NR only on the BKGD does emphasis the difference too much. Try NR on the whole image and run some sharpening to bring back the details. There also seems to be a slight blue cast.

I am not sure about this one Richard, although the flowers are nice and colorful the angle is steep and the bird is OOF. When the bird is OOF more sharpening will just bring out noise which is what has happened here

    Well Ok

gone back and reprocessed, right about the noise dont usually mess that up recently lol

So have re cropped, run average blur color correction (though I did check color and the white on the eye was stable?), curve did moe a little so was a little off.

run NR more effectively and adjusted brightness

maybe you like it more now; as far as HA goes I actually though this showed of the beak hook well?

I like the fact he is peering around the bright flowers and your repost is better as suggested.
I have never been a fan of from below ,but like you said you selected it to show the bill hook.
Did you take any other photos of this bird among these flowers ? because I love the possibilities of them together.

    Hi Chas

Unfortunately no more pics; indeed despite staking out this massive Leonotis hedge I really had few glimses of the bird at least showing itself - hence the narrative

I do have one or two good full bird shots of flower piercers though as every now and then they appeared around the cafe gardens or in more opn view.

I would love to go back to Finca Lerida , truly a lovely estate, and indeed very popular with the few birders that make it there. The gardens are awesome spread out amongst a working coffee estate. Bellbirds call from every angle anfd Quetzals are often seen there in number.

one day I will go back...thanks for posting

Repost makes it a stronger image, Richard. I think you did a good job for what you wanted to convey, bird looks better but maybe a little over sharpened. Would be great to see a shot of them going to work on a flower.

The repost is an improvement and I do like the flowers, but.... It does not eliminate the many problems that folks mentioned above.... The two biggest of those are the steep angle and the fact that we see so little of the bird. Not much to suggest....

Thank you for your comments Brendan and Arthur

Indeed it would be nice to catch a close up of the flower piercing; probably would be a unique picture?
I never witnessed that cos they travel around inside the bushes so quicly; I will however post up a full image of the species at a later date as I do have some
Arthur - Im currently reading some of your bulletiens on the 7D , marvellously written works, very informative and useful. Hope I can carry on learning and get some better shots as time goes by.
Costa Rica beckons again in late September so who knows what might be seen!

Have a great trip. The key to the 7D is to add enough light to get some data in the fifth box, the farther to the right the better..... Do you have our 7D User's Guide?

Nothing to add about the image that has not already been covered, except to say I know exactly the hedge @ Finca Lerida, as I made a number of images there myself last year. None of this bird, however...
