I attended the Weehawken, NJ Skyline Workshop led by Denise Ippolito and Scott Vincent, an old friend from my Jamaica Bay days. Man, we had fun and I learned a ton. Keep reading to see what I learned about my 800mm lens.
This image was created as an HDR Grunge (with tweaks) from a 5-frame AEB sequence. The five exposures were created with the Canon 800mm f/5.5L IS lens and the EOS-1D Mark IV. ISO 100. Five-frame (one-full stop) auto bracketing around the base exposure: 2.5 seconds at f/8. (Note: the longest exposure was 20 seconds at f/8.)
Until I attended this workshop I have never once made a sharp image with the 800 and a long exposure. Scott suggested that the problem was with Image Stabilization. I turned it off and voila, I made sharp images at a variety of crazy slow shutter speeds. Do note that I used Live View for mirror lock and the 10-second timer.
Don't be shy; all comments welcome.

Artie, It was a great night and we all had lots of fun. You created a masterpiece here. It truly is an erector set look. I liked the framing when I first saw it but your tweaks add so much to this. Nice!
The detail you've captured in this image is superb...and I really like the almost pastel blend of colors in the FG building and the contrast created with the deep, rich blues of the windows and BG building. The textures...the flow and contrast of both horizontal and vertical lines...this is really nicely done.
Awesome HDR composition, Artie. I love the sharpness you have across the entire frame. What makes it most interesting for me is that one can visualize different things in those windows... reminds me of "Rear Window". Love the range of colors. TFS the tip on the stabilizer.
