    Default Pied Kingfisher with catch

    Attached Images Attached Images

This male Pied Kigfisher had finished bashing his catch against the perch, and had turned the fish around to swallow head first. Taken at Easter in overcast conditions in the Pilaneberg nature reserve.

Terrific shot amazing detail and clarity. I don't know if it just my imagination but I get the impression there is a little halo around the tip of the upper mandible.
I wonder if perhaps you applied a sharpening mask and and not remove it from the left hand side of the perch - it's just that it seems very soft compared to the rest of the perch??

Superb IQ and the catch works nicely...Amazing the great work you produce in those horrible conditions we get here!

    Stuart:

Things are not looking good for the fish at this point

KF pose, sharpness and timing of image are all fine.

I did wonder about removing the left side of the perch (as Dan mentioned)

    Dramatic moment

    Cheers

Superb detail on this Kingfisher. I love the look of the fish and also seeing the tongue of the KF.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I realise the size of the perch is not everyone's taste, but knowing this place so well, I didnt feel it right to clone away the OOF part. I would have to have stopped down a whole lot to get it in focus, but the conditions were not in my favour. Furthermore, the closeness of the perch would not get me the whole perch in focus either.

Great capture, Stuart. Exposure and details on the bird are terrific. I love the tension between fish and tongue. I don't mind the oof part of the perch. I might have been tempted to brighten the eye just a tad.

Great close sho tof this cool little guy. I'm not diggin the oof part of the perch all the way but it doesnt ruin the imagefor me either. I am always in the middle about cloning or removing things I sometimes feel it's just not right.

Just an amazing capture in so many respects. Love the "tongue" showing and the head of the fish.

A famous perch Stuart! Had a very disappointing trip on Saturday - almost no action and not even one PK!!! They say the water level still too high and it is almost rainy season again!
