From a recent trip to Merritt Island, this bird are so tame that is very easy to take close up shots.
    I wish for more DOF...

    Canon 40D, 500mm, 1.4TC, 580EX Flash, Better Beamer, Tripod
    1/60, f5.6, iso250, +1EV, 700mm, Flash -2, full frame

Nice looking bird. Wish for a bit more room around the bird and also that the feet/tail feathers were also in focus.

Nice soft light and sharpness looks good.

Agree with paul that the crop is too tight. You mentioned that it is full frame, you could easily add some canvas in less than 5 minutes, of course if that was in your personal allowable image mod list.
Also there is a slight warm/mag cast.
And finally I would lighten the birds breast and face slightly to better match the lighter tone on the top of the head.

I photograph the Scrub Jays a lot out at Merritt and find that a bit of fill-flash really makes images of them pop. Even in overcast or soft light, the eyes are dark and the feather details will look muted. Fill-flash works well with these birds.

Curves applied with a quick mask and some slight WB correction.

    Thanks all for comments.
Peter, great improvement from my original post... I definitely need to work in my PS skills, I have been debating between spending time and $ on taking my first photography class or PS class... not sure yet which one I should go first.

Robert, I did use fill flash, I think I was so close to the bird that the better beamer was not effective.

    Thanks, Raul

    Sorry Raul,

    I missed that fact. :o

Robert's retooling looks good and it does look like you used flash there since the dark eye is very visible now. I usually use -2 or -3 and you used -2 so we are on the same page. It just needed some more adjustment.
