I had this juvi Common Tern in the lens for a half hour, waiting for something to happen. Then when it did, I wasn't quite prepared. I missed, by a split second, the exact moment when the adult passed the fish to the youngster. I also clipped the adult's far wing, and had to borrow part of a wing from another frame. I took off the tele-extender to avoid more clipped wings, and watched for another 45 minutes. I got several other bits of action, but never got the precise hand-off just right.

Great moment in difficult lighting conditions. The blue background adds to the strength of the overall scene. I think that some fill flash with a BB would have helped to reveal more the Mom's underwing and head.

    Lovely moment captured here Bill.
Rene made some good points, though I myself don't have a Better Beamer so my shot would probably have ended up exposed similarly...
Whites seem to be on the edge but I'm not viewing on the best monitor at the moment...

Thanks Rene and Morkel. This definitely would have been better taken two hours earlier, and/or with the bird angled slightly toward me to catch the sun on the underwing. I'm not proficient with flash and the BB; I've been reluctant to use fill on this kind of shot out of fear that the recharge time would have kept me from getting a burst of action shots. In the right hands, I'm sure it could have helped here.

Great interaction. Like the wing position of the bird on the left.

A well balanced comp bill, with both subjects evenly placed. Yep, I know how you feel when you wait ages to capture the moment, and one turn of your head, and one misses the action.
