Default Spotted Sandpiper in a pretty environment

    Attached Images Attached Images

As I was paddling along on my kayak yesterday afternoon I spotted this little guy hopping about in the yucky mud catching bugs. I was happy when he decided to jump onto this log with the pretty canopy of flowers. He stayed there for one image and then he flew away. My lighting conditions were horrible so I made the best with what I had. IQ could be better but I really liked his environment and thought he was worth sharing just for that.

    Hi Noelle,

I really like the inclusion of the habitat while keeping the bird isolated. The splash of color the flowers bring into the image is a plus. I like the pose and head angle of the bird. The image appears well exposed and has enough details in my opinion to make it effective. If this were mine, I would explore a composition that would crop a little off the left hand side of the image (our left) and perhaps just a tiny bit off the bottom (personal taste). Thanks for sharing your enjoyable image.

    Regards,

    Phil

OOH!!!! I like this a lot. So different to what we usually see. Love the framing of the environment. I like it as is...Very nice...Maybe check the water level, CW rotation maybe?

What a beautiful shot, Noelle. Almost a 3D effect. Love the spots of color provided by the foliage, the way the bird is framed by the branches, the pose, and the spot-on EXP and sharpness. Too good!

Love the entire presentation from the low kayak angle / view to the inclusion of the habitat.

Somehow it feels like it needs so CW rotation although it may simply be the angle of the rock to your position as well that makes it look that way?

What we have here is an exceptional wildlife shot, as simple as that.

    Noelle:

Excellent image, posters have hit the high points. Lovely environmental shot while still being a nice image of the bird. You did well with your lighting limitations.

re:rotation - this one is a bit of a challenge because of lack of reliable reference points, but I do believe when you look at the left end of the rock, and its reflection, that a slight CW rotation would be tech. correct. Having said that, I think the more important issue is how the bird looks in the image, his angle so to speak, and I would favor that being correct over absolute perfect rotation, so in this case , go with what looks best to you.

    Cheers

A well thought out composition, it's naturally beautiful... You did very well with the difficult lighting conditions

Why do you consider soft, even light horrible??? I am fine with the COMP--I find it quite elegant in fact. I would take a tiny bit off the bottom; no way would I crop anything from the left. But I would clone out the small area of black on the left frame-edge even with the log. Other than perhaps a bit of oversharpening of the bird the IQ looks fine as well. Ditto Joe on the flowers.

Artie, I have no problem with soft, even light when I am not in my kayak and photographing a hopping bird. I would prefer a higher shutter speed for this subject given his constant movement. The low light did not allow for that and I was already pushing it at ISO 1600.

Thanks for the comments and I am glad you think it is elegant

I have been away for a few days and catching up on pictures. I think this is one of my favorite of yours Noelle! I love how the flowers arch over the bird and give that lovely pop of color. Lighting is fine,
