Canon EOS-1D Mark II N, 8/12/2011 6:327 PM, Aperture-Priority AE, Tv( Shutter Speed ) 1/320, Av( Aperture Value ) 5.6, Center-Weighted Average Metering, Exposure Compensation -2/3, ISO 400, Lens EF300mm f/2.8L IS USM, RAW, Flash Off, White Balance Mode Auto, AI Servo AF, Picture Style Standard. 90 % of frame here, print for 12x18 image. Very basic CS4 work done, very little. Imaged from my kayak at about 15 feet away. There were 3 loons, 2 adults and 1 juvenile, about 2 months old. I will post several more over the next few days. I felt blessed to image these guys so close and without disturbing them or their behaviours.

    Grady:

Excellent eye, the lighting has really mad it pop. Strong sense of form from the light angle. Like the subtle green sheen showing on the head.
The breast looks a bit hot, our constant challenge with these guys

From a comp. point, I might try a version with a little more room right, below and in front, smidge less above. I realize you cropped it for a specific print, just stating my personal preferences here.

Good shooting angle from you yak.

Look forward to more! I am about done in Michigan for the season. The adults are starting to molt. I do however have a few thousand frames from this summer to work with, so won't run out for a while.

    Cheers

Overall I find a couple of issues with this image.

The whites are too hot and the overall image looks overexposed. The reds in the eye are too bright IMHO. The greens of the water are to strong in the yellow spectrum. I know this was getting to be long light time, but it looks a bit overdone.

The HA isn't enough and when combined with the OOF tail in the front of the image, it just doesn't work for me. I hate to sound negative but I'm just telling you what my eyes see.

Working with these birds out of the yak is a great experience!

First) The whites are not cooked or overdone. A few chest pixels blink, a very small amount.
Second) The red eye is as it is. It's a loon. It is the way it was seen and no changes were made to this image as to tones or color.
Third) The green water is reflecting the natural sunlight as it was going done. It's called golden light.
Forth) Ha angle is fine. A matter of taste!
And last) If you can't find anything positive, don't comment on an image. Pass it by.
