Steve,
A google search turns up a lot of similar posts, e.g.

Seems like the camera needs to be sent back for repair.
Roger
Thanks Roger, that was pretty much what I saw on the threads as well....good news is that I can use the camera still...bad news is that it chews the battery rapidly....but still beats the alternative
apparently the only way to fix is to send back to Canon...camera was out of warranty but they fixed free of charge.
On a somewhat related topic, I have twice within the last few months tried to get Canon to repair two different L series lenses and they have refused to do so claiming they no longer support these ($1500-$2000) lenses. Any thoughts as I would really like to get my 24-70mm f/2.8 repaired?
Thanks
Mike Hannisian
Hi Mike- This doesn't make a lot of sense on the part of Canon. That lens came out in late-2002 and is extremely popular. I would understand if it were the previous 28-70/2.8L.
I am with you on that John...I know folks have had varied experiences with their support...I have only had three experiences and they all have been fast and effective-albeit newer stuff....7d (2 (focus micro adj and battery recognition)) and the new 70-200L f2.8 II (IS issue)
And I've had the 24-105/4 and the 400/5.6 repaired by Canon Canada with no problems.
David- So is the 24-70 f2.8 that Mike is talking about.
Little late on this as I was looking for something else, but I have my 7D back in for the THIRD time to have that fixed (no communication with battery).
I'm doing all I can to get the camera replaced but no luck so far. I've had it 18 mos, and would love to get rid of it, but how can I sell something I don't want myself.
I had a simular message come up on my 10 month old 7d - I took it in to Canon and the guy at the service centre said that it was likley not a battery issue as the batteries seemed to work fine in other cameras and other quike testiing he did at the time. They said they would look at it and it would be a two week turnaround. It turned out in my case to be a shutter issue and I had the camera back in three days - they replaced something to do with the shutter. The service guy said that the camera just throws up this battery communication message as it does not know what else to say. It is like a default message.

Hate to hear you have had so many problems with your 7d...mine works fine now ....it definitely was not the battery...is was something in the camera that they fixed at no charge....not had the problem or any problem with the 7d since ....and its had heavy use in some pretty harsh climates since.
