    Default Common Sandpiper in environment

After days of appauling weather (rain) in the UK, managed to get out a while yesterday to have a go with the 7D.

This lone CS was poking around at the edge of the hide lagoon; its a 50 crop and perhaps a little soft for that , and the TC but worth comment I think
One big change I have made is to get into manual focussing which I find much easier with the nice new 1:1 screen on the 7D
Plumage very subtle colors and very fine so prob too soft?

Richard - While I like the inclusion of the environment, I think the sandpiper gets lost in the shot in this case. As far as sharpness goes, the flat lighting is not helping you out here - I think a little more contrast (it doesn't look like you have a white point) and some selective sharpening will improve the image.

Good job with the manual focus...looks spot-on. Details look a bit soft, however (likely for the reasons you state), and perhaps a bit more sharpening for web presentation would work. Interesting habitat for a shorebird. As is, the image could use a bit more of a crop below (at the risk of the degrading the image even more), and I wish the large rock in front of the bird wasn't there.

I have to be honest as this image isn't working for me, there is just not enough separation between subject and BG and the critical focus point seems to be on the BG as well since it looks sharper than the bird. IMHO the conditions were just poor here and there wasn't much you could do

I have to agree with Arash on this one. It's tough when we have no light :(
