On both my Galapagos and recently concluded Bear Boat trip I was on the lookout for HDR Grunge opps for wildlife for the HDR Grunge guide that Denise and I are working on. The first consideration is that the subjects be totally still. As in sleeping :).
This Coastal Brown Bear (Grizzly) was photographed with the tripod-mounted Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS lens and the EOS-1D Mark IV. ISO 800. Five frame +/_ 1 stop AEB around the base exposure: Evaluative metering +2/3 stop: 1/400 sec. at f/5.6.

Art, Love the effect. The bear almost glows with color. Nice peaceful sleeping pose. I might tone down the background light area just over the bears back, or blend in with the shadow above.. Beautiful capture, detail, and color.
You have a wonderful base image...a strong composition enhanced by the splash of foreground color among the rocks...good sharpness in the rocks immediately surrounding the bear, as well as with the bear itself...I like the warm, saturated color of the bear's coat and the plant life just to the right of the bear's nose - you struck a good balance between rich color element that enhances the subject rather than draws the eye away from it. Like Jay, I'd like to see the brighter patch of rock just above the bear's back toned down a bit...I think the image might be strengthened some by applying a light vignette to the upper corners of the image, bringing them into line with the darker tone of the foreground rocks. All that said..it's a fantastic image of a subject I hope to someday photograph.
Hi Artie, I love this composition! The peaceful sleep pose is wonderful. To me, it is the golden sunlight on the bear and on the tiny patches of vegetation that makes it so special. On the bg, I would go the other way in reducing the white patch. Excellent processing!
Artie, Great resting pose and I think you did a great job thinking to grunge this guy. I might tone down the colors a hair if it were mine but I respect your vision for this image and it is lovely.
Thanks Lady D. This version should be lots less orange than the image in Pane 1 but I am having color space issues so I am not positive :)
