A shot from 2009 taken here in FL.
Canon 40D 300 mm 2.8L w/2x
ISO 200 7.1 @ 1/2000
removed a small shadow from a branch. Dark bg done with in camera metering and a tweak of curves and burning tool. Not sure about the partial eye membrane showing?

Great exposure and what a twisted up pose you captured.. I'm liking it Cheryl, nice job!
Nice EXP, framing, and detail in the WHITES. The partially lowered nictitating membrane bugs me a bit. The biggest problem with this otherwise lovely image is that the head is angled a bit too far away from us; with images of preening birds perfectly square to the back of the camera is almost always best.

Good job on the whites, and the details are very nice. I like the contorted pose and dark BG.
I like the pose, and the expression in the eye with the nictitating membrane is a good one, and gives the bird a rather surprised expression. I'm glad the edge of the membrane lies in front of, and doesn't bisect, the pupil. The whites, and the feather detail, are excellent.

It's a perfect exposure, great detail in the whites, and black BG. I really like the image, and it expresses the theme perfectly. Well done.
loverly image, its all been said, agree on Richard comment on the nictitating membrane, well done.
I like the details, exposure, sharpness, preening pose and dark BG. Very well done Cheryl!
nice pose, BG and whites. A bit more wider view might have been better. But in a rookery, you typically have distractions in wider views.
agree with Artie about the head...esp. because light is from your left.
Thanks everyone![]()
Richard Sterns comments echo mine. I love these whites. Excellent job on the exposure. Great details. Thanks for sharing this one.

life is like a box of nictitating membranes, huh Cheryl? I like this image a lot! am curious about a little looser crop, but really nice work with the whites! and those membranes....remind us that we humans can't control everything in life.
