This is the frame prior to my previous posting. I like this one more but for some reason the other one caught my eye first when processing quickly the other day.

Taken with my new equipment...loving it!

    Techs:
    Nikon D3s with 500mm f4 VR-II + 1.4TC @ 700mm
    f5.6 @ 1/3200 SS @ ISO-1600

Great wing position mate...But the head looks OOF. Like the blue sky BG!

Thanks Dumay. Have to admit critical focus is more on the wing than the head...still need to get used to working with the DOF on the 500mm...should have stopped down to f7.1 or f8 in hindsight.
Sharpened the head some more now...

    Morkel:

Well exposed, nice colors, interesting pose.

Agree about the DOF issue. It is tough when a fairly large bird like this turns towards you, just not possible to get it all in focus, and easy to have the focus slip to the larger mass, wings or body, and not the relatively small head!

Glad you are having fun with the new gear. That is one great set up.

    Cheers

great dynamic pose and nice light, bummer with the DOF these huge birds are a challenge to get inside the dof at f/5.6. Even f/8 wouldn't be enough at close distance, I'd just take the TC off and crop more with D3S and noise-free files cropping is a piece of cake ;)

Morkel I have also noticed that I get much sharper images without a converter. I do rather crop later as Arash suggested but we all need reach at times ESP for smaller birds. The DOF is also shallower on full frame camera's compaired to a croped camera. I at times miss my D300 but never really used it much

Super shot of this species, like the pose very much.

Morkel, good advice above. with that angle of such large bird that close, wide-open will not cut it. Still...a very nice picture. really liked the wrap-around wing position.

Congrats on your new toy mate, and a fantastic flight pose to go with it. Love the wing position, together with the feather detail.

As presented, the face and eye are sharp enough for me and sharp enough to sell. Spectacular bird and pose. EXP spot on.
