    Hi Folks;

    Captured this male Gambel's Quail perched on a Mexican Fence Post cactus in our garden that didn't survive the winter completely.

    Comments welcome and appreciated.

    This is a good looking quail Gus. I wish we had those here. We have only bobwhites here and they are rare nowadays from habitat loss. The quail looks good, nice and sharp, maybe a touch too much flash. The perch could be toned down a little. Of course a little head turn toward us would have been ideal. TFS

    Hi Gus- Great to see this species. Agree with Jack in the flash light and head angle. Not sure what flash exposure compensation you used but if it were 0 then I would probably cut back by -1 2/3 or -2.

    Sharp as a tack, but I have to agree with the flash comments.

    Hi Gus, great collection of species you have in your back yard! I agree that the flash is a bit harsh. Distance is a big factor with flash, and I'm thinking you were pretty close to this bird. I would paint away the colored areas at the top of the image so the background is all gray. Thanks for sharing!

    Wow Gus, a very interesting looking bird and I think that it is a great image that would be even better by toning down the bird a bit and the perch quite significantly. Also agree with Kerrys comment on the fixing the top of the background to all gray.

    Great comments above, the three issues here IMO are:

    1. Flash - practice with distance, in fact you can use distance on most flashes. ETTL is easier to use, generally I shoot with a -2 compensation - of course it depends.
    2. background could be muted per Kerry's suggestions
    3. Composition, I might move this subject to the right and make the image a bit larger (tight for me) - all subjective stuff.

    Nice shot of a beautiful bird, thanks for sharing this one. Very original and great still shot.
