I took this picture in Botswana last year. The sun was just about to come over the horizon so feathers on right have a pinkish hue to them.
This little guy is about 6 inches high.
I was still learning so my settings are really wacky but I got away with them!

Great bird, with nice pose and composition!

Could be my eyes but I'm seeing a bit of haloing around the bird.

    Gail:

This fellow is just too cute. For some reason, makes me think of a Christmas tree ornament the way it is perched.

I do agree with Mike about the halo.

    Cheers

Hi Gail, Im off to Botswana at the end of August, so hopefully I get to see one of these guys, as I dont have a single Owl image in my files. Comp and placement work for me, and there is a slight hint of a halo. I would also give this a slight CCW rotation, as the little guy isnt sitting level.

Sweet little Owl. Great eye contact and nice perch, although I might have been tempted to take just a pinch off the bottom. Ditto the halo; but a really handsome image.

Sweet! Agree re the rotation. Would crop a bit off the top.

Thank you all for your comments. I took a bit off the top and bottom and did a CCW of 3 or 4 degrees. The halo is over the left shoulder but it is present in the RAW shot as well so I don't think it is a halo.. I don't see any halo anywhere else. Is it the patch over the shoulder that you guys are commenting on?

Shoulder, and top of head, and just a teeny bit along the top of the top left horizontal twig. Not enough to hurt a fine image, but could be removed with a steady hand and a very small (e.g. 5-10 px) clone tool at 80%, if you were so inclined.

The white on the left shoulder is part of the bird's plumage and is not what I was referring to. I'm seeing a halo around much of the bird and some of the perch. It is likely due to sharpening (in which case it can be eliminated by masking out the BG when sharpening) or possibly running Shadow/Highlight at too high a level (in which case you can either back off the S/H or again, try masking the BG). If it's neither of those, not sure what to recommend. Maybe others will have ideas.

    Default what a cutie!

This is quite a catch! At first I thought a closer crop would be good, and I agree that some of the bottom or top could go, but I have to say that the blue empty space around him gives a feeling of his vulnerability. His firm grip on the tip of the branch adds to the effect. Dawn
