Default A Little Owl, giving directions ?

    Hi all,

Here is an image of a Little Owl as it came in to land.

There are many occasions when I think I have got an image in the camera only to find that I later reject it on closer inspection. Often there is something “not natural” about the subject even though the picture is a true representation of the event. Typically an eye is half closed or the body or wing is twisted in an awkward and unusual manner. Such images quickly find themselves heading towards the recycle bin.

This image roughly falls into that “not natural” category, with only one wing being visible, however the comical element ensured I clicked save and not delete.

There are plenty more images of Little Owls from this current project HERE

    C&C welcome.

    Cheers

This is great! Love it! If anything maybe a tiny bit off the top.

You know this pic is great! (would love if the owl was winking with one eye)

    Austin:

Glad you kept it! Very fun. You could come up with a zillion fun titles for it.

The low shooting angle, smooth background, light, all great. Could try the most subtle of lightening on his right eye, to smooth out the shadows a bit. This is a lovely example of how birds pupils aren't wired the same as humans. We have what is called a consensual response, shine a light in one eye, and the other pupil constricts to the same size. This isn't true in birds.

    Great.

    Cheers

Nice one Mr T, love the light on this one, but it appears that there was not a huge amount available based on the ISO? Somehow it reminds me of the closing credits of Morecambe & Wise as they skipped off stage. Notice the variation in size of pupil, good to see no use of flash with these birds. Was this single FP, or expanded FP?

I better break open this new kit now, based on this posting.

Austin, excellent head on capture, good eye contact, and the unusual pose works well. I like the two tone BG too. Well captured.

Hi all, Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated.

@Randy - I will try and lighten the eye a touch. It is a little strange with odd pupils.

@Steve - This was taken just a few minutes before the sun went below the horizon, so the light was very nice but "weak" if you understand my meaning. With 800mm of lens and after in flight images, I wanted well over 1/1000 ss, so up goes the ISO. There is some NR on the background to help but hopefully it is presentable. I used expanded FP ( main plus those surrounding the main FP )

    Cheers

    Austin

Austin, what a shot. perfect for the monthly theme. low angle, BG, light, head-on angle...well done on all fronts. Super-Low angle has helped minimise what looks like some ugly ground. one heck of a shot.
