Default First post -- Laughing Gull Portrait

Got this one April 9 at Fort De Soto in Florida. Saw this guy as I was leaving the beach after my first day of trying to shoot birds with a rented lens. Shot from the car with a bean bag. Not much PP, but I did crop a little bottom and right. C&C welcome -- I need to learn what to do better in the future.

Welcome! The first gull is nice and sharp and looks well exposed. I find the OOF gull in the background distracting. It may have worked better if his head was turned more towards us to compliment the in focus gull. Also the diagonal line in the background is not pleasing in my opinion as it cuts right through the gulls head.

Welcome to BPN Ron! Yes, the front gull looks good...well exposed and sharp (but oversharpened for web). Sometimes juxtapositions work well, but in this case I would have preferred the far gull not present. Had you been on foot and the far gull not there then moving left to give you an all green BG would have been a good option to explore (I know impossible in this instance but just someting to think about next time).

    Looking forward to more!

Thank you, Daniel and James, for the kind words and advice. I thought it was over-sharpened as well. Used Arthur Morris's suggestion for sharpening, but it went too far I think. I'll have to play with that.

Thanks to all. I will definitely try again. While I'm shooting for my own eye and satisfaction, I'd sure like to match, if only occasionally, the quality I see in this forum. I just need to get past the initial excitement of getting a picture, and make the effort to get a better angle and exposure.

    Ron:

    A big welcome to BPN!

You have come to the right place to improve our nature photography.

It takes a while to see all the aspects of a picture as you are taking it, to really see the background, composition, lighting, etc. Practice helps a lot.

Gulls are great learning subjects, both on land and in flight, so work them whenever you can.

Good critique points from the folks above.

    Look forward to more.
