    Default upgrade to Lightroom 3?

    To all you Lightroom users:

My daily quick workflow is in LR 2, using NIK plugins. I also go into Photoshop CS5 from LR. What benefit (if any) would there be to upgrade to LR 3?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

I have been using LR3 since the first beta so its hard to remember what was changed but here are some things that I can remember besides whats in the video below

    - noise reduction is way better, sharpening as well if I recall
    - you can import and change to .dng files automatically
    - when you import you can have the files written to 2 different locations, when traveling I write them to my laptop + external HD and carry them in separate bags just in case one gets lost :)
    - watermarking
    - you export with dimension and size limitations which is nice for posting on forms like here, in LR2 you had to use mogrify
    - you can export and sync with external sites like Facebook, smugmug etc which is nice, also does metadata sync

this vid covers some of the big improvements

One thing to note is that recently the full version has been on sale for 150USD so it maybe cheaper to sell your LR2 and buy the full version depending on what you can sell LR2 for. Also from what I recall you could go from LR2 to LR4 once its released but there isn't even a beta or any talk of when one will be avail so I don't think LR4 will be coming out this year.

if none of these things do much for you though it may not be worth the upgrade if you have been using 2 for this long you could probably hold out until the next release. You can download the LR3 beta and it doesn't touch the LR2 and if you don't like it just remove it, if you do you can just upgrade the license key and call it a day :)

Jamie, a belated thanks for your reply. The features you mentioned make it attractive to me to upgrade, especially for $60 on Amazon for the student/teacher edition. I had not thought of selling my LR2 copy. I didn't know you could do that.

You need to have LR2 installed in order to install LR3 as an upgrade.
I'm pretty sure Adobe would say you can't sell LR2 and still be eligible for the upgrade price to LR3

Thanks for that info, Dick. I did get LR3 for a good price, and installed it, but I have not started to use it yet because I need to verify my teaching status with Adobe.
