I took this on my recent trip - Frome swamp in far NW New South Wales. I had decided to leave my tripod some 200 meters away as I was trying for BIF. This guy popped up very close to me so I just used what I had to get the shot - a bag. We were eye level!

    7d, 500mm HH (lying flat on the ground using a bag as a tripod) 1/1000 @ 5.6, iso 400, EV +2/3.

    Thanks Tom

Beautiful Tom. Lovely setting, nicely framed. I only wish for a slight head turn but this is still fantastic.

    The backpack worked a treat

Nice low angle here! A bit more DOF would have helped here in my opinion as well as a better head angle as Chris mentioned.

Good job in using a bag as improvised support. This gave you a really good perspective of this bird.
I love the matching tones of the bird and the background. I also like the pose, composition and the feather detail.
I only wish the ground had a uniform color without the white section underneath the bird.

Ah, man, you got the low angle I would have wanted on my rail image...well done for that! I too wish you had a better HA, but I love the food bit in the bill, and the small flowers add alot here.

Agree with what other people have said and wondering on PP if you could have tuned the white(sky reflection ?) horizontal streak toward a color that blended better with the rest of background.

The super low angle, the bg color and especially those tiny flowers complement this gorgeous bird so well.
Like the comp as well. As mentioned, more DOF would have probably made this even nice.

Good sharp detail Tom, and I like the feeding pose. Hope you dont mind, but I felt the overall image was a touch bright, so I ran a multiply blending layer over the whole image.

keep those Rail images coming Daniel - I was lucky that I found an area that was not wet mud so I could get low. I like the flowers too.

Thanks for the comments guys - HA was an issue but I do not think it kills the image. These guys are real head bobbers when they feed - This is the best HA of the lot. I did wait for the head to be above the white water line.
