Sometimes it seemed as if these little guys were given lessons on how to pose for the photographers in the blinds. Machias Seal Island last month. C&C welcome.

Hey Bill, this is the first ever pose with a wingspread Ive seen from a Puffin. Well timed to capture the moment. Good eye contact, and you must have been pretty close to have used a short lens.

Great image Bill, I like the horizon line where its at, detail looks great... could use to be a bit warmer for my taste.

Thanks Ofer. Yes, I also see a bit of noise. I was reluctant to use NR on the bird, but could probably use a touch on the wings. The D7000 simply stopped working the day before this trip; gave me an ERR message. Nikon says it needs a new CCD and new shutter mechanism, but claims it's not their problem. Luckily I have a 3-year service agreement with Mack, so I've just sent it there. (Also lucky I was carrying the D90 as a spare.)

Love the pose and all the details you were able to get from the muted light.

Wonderful capture Bill...I was not lucky enough to capture such a neat pose during my short stay in the cramped blind...very well done...TFS

What an awesome pose, and I like the amount of perch you have showing. I personally wish the horizon line wasn't so close to the head...a version with the sky filled in may work too. Hope you get your D7000 soon!!

Bill, I really love this pose. Nice exposure, and the color is good. I also like the head-on look.

Having just returned from Maine mid-July where I attended an Audubon Camp teacher workshop on Hog Island, I got to see puffins when we boated around Eastern Egg Rock. The only photos I got of these birds were from a moving boat. I wish I had known about Machias Seal Island prior to my trip, since I was disappointed that we didn't land on Eastern Egg Rock.
