Hey Mike. You got the head sharp, and I like that the wings are back. But there are a few things you could do to improve the image. First of all, the face is in the shadows. If this is a setup, point the flower in the opposite direction. If it's natural, use a different flower at the same angle relative to the sun that I just described. You could also mount the flash off camera to light up the face more. I would avoid shooting a midday if possible, as the light gets a little harsh. The stem of the flower is pretty OOF; you could have stopped down a bit and bumped your ISO. Lastly, the reds seem a bit oversaturated; I might do some selective desaturation of the reds in the flower.

Thanks for the advice Doug. My yard has some major light issues in the morning and afternoon. This was not a setup. I tried using a setup but wound up watching birds go everywhere but. I want to try off camera flash.

Good to see you posting and commenting, Mike. Doug hit all the points that I thought of. Only additional suggestion would be to prune some of your perches, don't give them quite so many choices. I admire your persistence and before the end of the hummingbird season you just may get your dream shot, especially if you do what Doug said. :)

I like your BG and you have nice details on your hummer. The light is what is causing you issues here, and I think Doug's critique was on point.
