    Default Canon 400 DO

    Hello
    I need your help
    I have a 300 f.2,8 and I am thinking to buy also a 400 for have 100 mm more...
I like hand shoot and so 500 mm is too much eavy for me.
I have also 100/400 and I use both with Mark IV and 7D.
    What you think about ?
I read different notice on the web about this lens.
Same people are ok and for other is ko!
It could be useful or it will be a duplicate of the other my lens ?
    Thanks

The way I compare lenses is to look at their focal length with extenders when wide open up to f5.6 to sort of develop a common denominator. For the 300 f2.8 you can add a 2x and have 600 f5.6. For the 400Do you can add a 1.4 and have 560 at f5.6. So I look at it as though the 300 f2.8 have more glass and can therefore have a longer effective focal length.

Similarly the 400 f2.8 should have similar amount of glass as the 800 f5.6 and the 600 f4. Now the current 800 f5.6 is better because it is a new version so they have made it lighter and it has much better IS. Sure there is a difference when adding a 2x extender on quality and quickness to focus. However the new version 3 of the 2x is supposed to be noticeably sharper than the old one.

If I was in your shoes I would try the 300 f2.8 with the new 2x iii. Then with your 100-400 you should have it really well covered.
I do mostly handheld shooting myself. I use a the Dual Camera black rapid strap to carry 2 bodies around, one with the 500 f4 and 1.4X and the other with the 400 f5.6 (primarily for birds in flight).

Another factor, often overlooked, is the slowing of the autofocus for 1.4x and 2.0x TC II (and III) when compared to bare lens.
Having a 600mm/4, handheld, for flight is a lot better than having a 300mm/2.8 with 2x TC. You'll notice the significant difference in ability to focus and follow birds in flight handheld (or on a tripod). But if you were only doing static subjects, then a 300 with a 2x would be fine....

If you need the 100-300mm range I can see why you want to keep the 1-4 lens, but I wouldn't add another 400mm lens to your kit if you do keep it. Either replacing it or adding the 1.4x and 2x TCs for your 300 2.8 would make more practical and financial sense IMO.
