    Default Lesser Yellowlegs Stretching.

Ah, fall migration is slowly but surely starting to gain momentum. That can only mean shorebirds! This Lesser Yellowlegs (my first migrating shorebird sighting of this season WOOHOO!!) was calmly foraging for food when it stretched its wing. This is a pretty common behaviour with many of the shorebirds, and with patience the odds are very good to observe.

The sun was just starting to shine on the background reeds, and this extra brightness caused the subject to be exposed quite dark (if wanting to prevent said background to be blown)...hence the need for lots of flash to light it correctly.

Canon 7D + 100-400L @400mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/320s., f/6.3, ISO 800, 580 EX II flash @ +2.7 FEC (histogram checked), handheld (lying in muck / duck dung mixture), about 75% FF.

Great picture, Daniel. The background has very nice pattern and colours, reminds me to the coming fall. The wing stretching pose is great.
One question: did you use fill flash at high speed mode at plus 2 2/3?
I'm not aware of the meaning of FEC.

    Nice pose and BG, Daniel.
The banded colored background is a real plus.
    Excellent as usual.

Thanks Karl. Yes, you are correct...high speed sync and +2 2/3 "Flash Exposure Compensation" (FEC)

Very pleasing capture, Daniel. I love the wing stretch, the BG and the low angle. It's a nice environmental and behavior capture. I can relate well to the lying in "who knows what."

Can't expect better conditions than you describe to capture the wildlife. Impressive use of flash.

Excellent pose and soft light. Well done on flash work, it really helped add some light on the bird. The BKD colours also add nicely.

Great flash work! I would have probably given up on this shot.
I like the low angle, background and ballet pose.
Please send that Lesser Yellowlegs this way. Over here we mostly get Greater variety.

I like everything, the pose, the shooting angle and the com...But personally find the BG distracting. Great flash-work

Hey Dan, what I like about this, is how well the bird is separated from the surrounding BG. Just love the DOF effect too. Great timing to capture the stretch, overall tack sharp, and getting down and dirty has really worked well. Great job.
