Default Am. Avocet look back pose

40D. 400 f5.6L at f/6.3. iso 400. 1/2500s. I realise the lack of eye-contact. But for some reason, I liked the extreme head turn. Does it work? The Avocet was walking about. Although I did manage to get myself parallel for most shots, it simply wasn't possible to keep pace :-)

    All comments welcome.

I like it a lot even without the eye-contact, the BG is great and the beak position works well with the tail...

Great low angle as per usual, and well detailed and exposed. I'd prefer less of a head twist and I could do without the dark area at very bottom.

Lovely light, colours and detail. I agree re the head turn - nothing major though.

This pose works for me in this case b/c it really shows how long the beak is in relation to the bird's body. The eye also has a catchlight which is helpful. The bottom line I find a bit distracting.

I'm not a member of the head angle police though would prefer to see this subject in landscape crop.

Thx everyone. I agree that eye contact would have been nice. Having said that, I feel that with a less extreme head turn, it would not have come out as alert as it is. I guess, I like the tension the pose creates.... Ideal would have been me being a couple feet to my left.

also agree that the bottom strip can go. I tried that but it looked like there wasn't enough room for those long legs.

Bob, the orig is a horizontal shot. Yes, it does look good that way. went with the tighter crop for web presentation. Since it is a look back, I could keep it vertical and still have some space in front of the bill.

Beautiful exposure. Nothing to really complain about.
I don't think it quite works 100%. Not because of the head turn per se, but because the body isn't perpendicular to the viewer as well. I think with both at 90* it would work "better".

It not perfect but works very nicely IMO. Great colours, soft light and a great BG. FG could be croped out and then would add canvas to get the same colours. Nicely done Kaustubh.

I like the details, nice breeding plumage and display of environment, I also wished for a slightly better HA.

I like i as presented. Great IQ, great exp, great shooting angle...I feel a 1 degree CW rotation needed. But a fine image!

KD, Im fine with the pose, as I like how the bill follows the line of the top of the wing. Well exposed, with soft colours. Another vote for taking a bit off the bottom.

What a gorgeous bird, Kaustubh. Lovely light, and low angle. HA is not a deal breaker for me. Agree to the bottom being mildly distracting, but see your point that cropping it would leave room desired for virtual feet.
