Jim, excellent side lighting effect here, and you have exposed this so well. I do like the flying posture too. I like this lots - well captured.

    Hi Gail,

I noticed that this young male Northern Harrier was hunting in a repeatable pattern. Every 15 minutes or so, the bird would pass thru an area near the road where we could photograph him while he was hunting. WHen I arrived at the spot, I noticed that there were some areas of shade that the bird would fly thru, so I figured out the correct exposure for both the shade and the sun. When the bird entered the shaded area I switched to the exposure for shade. As the bird flew towards me, emerging from the shade, I adjusted the exposure on the fly and made this image. (just like we learned in class during the workshop) The dark bg is the shaded area.

Thanks Jim for explaining this! I don't think I am fast enough yet to figure out exposures on the fly like that (every time I try, I turn the wheel the wrong way but I will keep practicing like you taught me!! I love how you imagine the image before it happens- a real gift

    Gail,

If you try to anticipate what will happen next and think about how you will deal with it via camera settings, then you will be ready and know what to do when it happens. Observing behavioral patterns will help you anticipate the action.

Very cool Jim, I love the mood created here. I also like that even with the strong sidelight a catchlight was had at the corner of the eye.

Love the dark background and the way the light is just touching the harrier.

For printing you might want a little more room up top. Image wise it's captivating.
