    Default Black Kite?

    Hello All

This is my first extended attempt at BIF with my 500. I spent an afternoon a few weeks ago in an elevated beer garden in a town called Broome on North western Australia while on holiday with my wife. A moderate breeze was blowing and these birds were ridge soaring backwards and forwards over a large clump of Mangroves growing around the edge of an estuary below called Roebuck bay. I think the birds are called Black Kites but please correct me if someone knows. Mostly they were flying above me and in the bright mid day sun I could only get poor images showing little underwing detail in a high contrast situation but I persevered anyway as it was good panning practice. Occasionally however some would dive below my level, I imagine to investigate a potential lunch in the mangroves and I was able to get a largely better exposed shot. So what do you think? For the record the occasional beer helped as it held me at the site (~4 hours) and kept me from getting too frustrated when the birds mostly were flying well above me, but generally I don't take my 500 to the bar. (Everwhere else according to my wife, but not usually the bar...)

The presented has had canvas added and the upper wing tips reconstructed as they were outside the frame at exposure. I have also overlayed a slight gradient in the background simply to add a little more detail. Its almost full frame..

I like the pose and head angle, feather detail is nice , especially the tail. The BG is nice too.

The lower wing tip looks like the first and second feathers are cut off a little, the upper wing tips look great, nice photoshop work.

Don - nice one and thanks for the narrative. I always enjoy the stores behind the pictures.

Well, HH 700MM pretty impressive. Have tried this and can't get the detail I want. I can HH the 500 but always seem to produce motion blur with the 1.4,..hence the tripod. Technically, might consider a wider aperture, since there was not a background to control. I realize you gave up one stop with the TC, wider aperture would have given more shutter as needed. Especially HH that much focal length - well done.

I love the back view with the feather detail and patterns. The picture has a clean eye (might add some light here) and I like the hunting/looking head angle. Lower wing tip(s) looks cut and might need some work. Regarding composition, I tend to like more space, a tad tight IMO but nice first BIF post. Much better than mine.

Got to love a man who takes a 500MM to the bar, you are my new hero. If this is your first BIF we are in for many more fine pictures like this one.

With my 4 X pints of our best local brew the guy looks a slight bit hazy . . . maybe a round of sharpening would help (?). Nice image, Don.

    Hi Wendell

I did try and push the sharpening a bit more but ended up with artifacts which bug me more that an imperfectly sharp image, so I decided to leave it alone...I agree it could be better so obviously I will need to go back and practice more... and with the camera as well...

Hi Don, I don't know from experience, but Google confirms your ID as spot on - black kite and a real beauty too! I love a good dorsal view as well as a good pint, so you have it all going on here. Perseverance always seems to pay off eventually. Really nice exposure, color, and detail. Good job on the reconstruction. My only thought is that it feels tight in the frame to me. I would suggest adding space on the top, bottom, and left. Excellent job, look forward to more 500mm pints!
