Default Green Heron Surrounded by Duckweed

    Attached Images Attached Images

A simply composed full-frame vertical image of this species that is normally super skittish around these parts. This one has become somewhat of a local celebrity among the area photographers for its' tolerance to human presence.

Heavy sidelighting in bright sunlight required LOTS of flash to fill in the shadows (I need to get a Better Beamer!)

Canon 7D + 100-400L @300mm, aperture priority, evaluative metering, 1/1250s., f/6.3, ISO 800 (it's favourite perches are in the shade thus the high ISO), +1 EC, 580 EX II flash @ +3 FEC, minor duckweed surface clean-up.

A beautiful portrait, Daniel. The duckweed makes a gorgeous BG; perch and pose are lovely, HA perfect. I wonder if the flash flattened some of the fine feather detail that you might have gotten under better lighting conditions?

Dan, excellent colours on the heron, sharp, and you have used the fill flash very well. I do like the surrounding duckweed, especially as it falls out of the DOF range. Good choice to capture this vertically.

Great image of this heron. I wish we had one like that around here.
I like the pose, perch and the surrounding duckweed. I also think this goes well with a vertical crop but I am not a fan of 4x6 vertical portraits.
I would suggest trying an 8x10 or similar vertical crop, leaving a little bit more room on the sides.

Love the pose, setting, BG, and composition!

Agree with Bill that bird does look a bit "flat", maybe from the flash?
Might try a mid-tone contrast enhancement on the bird.

Good image considering the harsh light.I like the comp and the perch. I am not liking this one as much as I usually like your shots because of the brightness of photo. I would still be very happy to have taken this shot

The setting on this one is great just as the one with the turtle was. You were lucky to have such a tolerant heron.

    I like this image

The green background really brings out the color of the heron. Great. I would prefer a bit darker presentation, but then I tend to like my prints darker than most, so maybe you are right on!
