I don't know how they see their prey through the heavy duckweed, but the herons there consistently catch fish as if the water was clear. This Great Blue Heron was oblivious to my presence...once it took its place on that perch I was able to maneuverer for a better angle/BG and test a few settings.

Canon 7D + 100-400L @235mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/250s., f/6.3, ISO 800, 580 EX II flash @ -1.7 FEC (settings histogram checked), handheld, FF (slight CW rotation and corners cropped off), some debris cleaned off the duckweed.

Great image and hunting action. The colors work really well together. I like the diagonal line in the composition.

This is really nice. I think the diagonal line created by the heron's body really makes this picture special. Love the uniform green on the water. I might clean up the little specular highlight in ruc.

I'm not a fan of the intersecting perch. Kinda looks like he/she is holding its head up with it.

Daniel, I love the pose and sharpness. The green duckweed makes a smooth canvas for the head .

Nice pose and I like the green "carpet". I would have blurred more and desaturated a bit the grass in background to make it less distractive.

Great sorrounding for this (or any) bird.
It just makes the bird pop.

I love everything about this image Daniel. The birds pose, the bg, the perch, the trail thru the greens in the bg and the algae textured water. Really nice
