Another one from our very successful Fonthill castle visit. This was taken from a small building next to the castle. I did the same image with a fisheye which worked well, but I also liked this one. Taken with my 5DMK2, 17mm, 3 image HDR, merged in Photomatix.
I might have cropped the right side so the arch entered the border at the same height as the left border. You also might want to find a vertical reference line, on the castle, or level the horizon line. While there is distortion with the lens, it is still good to have a reference that is "true".
Hey Nick,
I'm going to have to try that shot when I go back next time! Great vision seing this. I understand Mark's concerns with level.....hard to do at that extreme WA but it looks like the center rooftop is level....or close....so I would double check. He does also bring up a valid point on the RH side......but then for me, it would be too centered. I don't mind the WA lean in images.....but you know some poeple may. For me the exxagerated perspective is what I find appealing in the image! VG job on the PP'ing too!
PS I think I like the fisheye B&W better though!
Okay...bubble used and the roof line is level..its level..the building is a bit askew to begin with and the wide angle adds distortion, not going to find any vertical straight lines on this one...Mark I appreciate your input but the distortion was the idea here...Roman the fisheye is my choice as well. Let's see what others think...Just wish I didn't clip the arch..
Hi Nick, Well handled! The distortion in the image is what to be expected and adds to the buildings perspective based on the angle taken. Good use of HDR bringing out the detail in the sky since it was a blah morning. The framing doesn't bother me since IMO you got enough of it in to satisfy the idea.
Nick, I like your thoughts for this image. The castle looks a little big in the opening. I am not fond of the fisheye look of the building. It makes it look caved in. But that is just my opinion. I think this might work better if you put the castle more in the distance. It might be nice if the sides and the top of the arch were not so cut off. I think the shot has potential. I look forward to more.

Love the perspective, shooting through the arch is great. I like the colors and glad you got the wee bit of seperation on the left between castle and arch (that was close). I would love to see "the other one". I like that the castle color and texture isn't overthetop.
Thanks for the compliments. This is the OOTB forum??? NO? Not to worry I have plenty of dead on images of this place and I certainly have no problem using perspective control or lens correction.. Here is a link to some of the others:
Hey Nick,
I really like that you had the creative vision to frame the castle with the colorful tile covered arch and to do it all in camera. Not the usual comp from Fonthill. I love the distortion on this one and it easy for the viewer to see that it was the makers artistic intention. I also like that you left some room on the RHS to offset the castle. Hope you don't mind... but I quickly played with it in PS to show you what I would do if it were mine. Sloppy PS work but just wanted to show you. I would further distort the LHS of the castle in order to you give a tad more separation on the LHS. Love the one with the fisheye but this one is also a fantastic different take.
Nick,
I like the way the lens distortion brings the castle to a point under the arch.
I prefer Susan's repost, as a matter of fact I would like to see more sky/room to the left side of the castle(as I'm facing it). Additional sky would be a more symmetrical compostion emphasizing the castle's peak under the arch.
