Default From A Wave-tossed Panga (Zodiac)

    Attached Images Attached Images

This Galapagos Penguin was photographed from a wave-tossed panga with the the Canon 300mm f/2.8L IS lens, the Canon EF 1.4X III TC, and the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +2/3 stop: 1/1000 sec. at f/5 in Manual mode.

Once I had the exposure right for the bird I set it manually so that I did not have to worry about the tonality of the background be it light buff as here or black rock the next moment. As described in detail in Digital Basics, I added canvas to the top of this image. Losing the bit of rock was an option but I feel that it adds to the image.

As I have said before and often, photographing from a panga (Zodiac) is–with the boat rocking from the waves and the wind–very challenging. Thanks a stack to Bart Pembroke who loaned me his 300 f/2.8 IS for this panga ride. As we floated by this bird the backgrounds were changing constantly. I know that the distant buff rock wall was the winner. Having this bird call at just the right moment was pure luck. I do remember praying that I would be able to keep the sensor on the bird as we swept past the perch rock. This is the sharper image from a two-frame sequence.

Hey Artie! I love the open beak, cool eye, and buff-colored BG. Exposure and sharpness are perfect as expected. I could go either way on the little bit of rock.

Looking forward to more Galapagos images!

This image rocks (even with the little rock, which I too think adds to the image). All looks great, but what makes this image for me is the view of the serrations inside the bill.

How the heck you get a nice clear image floating on water is amazing to me. I love the close crop and nice clean BG. The open bill is so cool but what I am really drawn to is the almost 3 dimensional eye. I can see all the way in there. I too can have or not have the rock and I also see this image cropped right above the wing line.I would hesitate though as well cause I do like the wing showing as it helps me to ID it as a penguin. Thanks for the story and kudos to you for achieving this.

You definitely chose a great BG ... excellent exposure and detail!

Still seems a bit tight at the top for my taste. Maybe a bit more on the right also.

Great BG and love the IQ. The eye is pretty amazing with all the layers of colors. Why not f8 or 9 to get more of the body in focus as you had plenty SS? (Not a crit just a question) And I know you are a strong advocate of cleaning up distractions in your images. Is there a reason for leaving the rock at the base of the image as I feel that its not enough to add to the image but distracts more than anything. Look forward to the response

    Hi Dumay,

    re:

I was already stopped down from wide open (f/4). On a rocking panga I will always try to keep a high shutter speed. Furthermore, stopping down to f/8 or f/9 would not provide enough additional d-of to render the body sharp.

And I know you are a strong advocate of cleaning up distractions in your images. Is there a reason for leaving the rock at the base of the image as I feel that its not enough to add to the image but distracts more than anything. Look forward to the response

Two things: 1- I liked it better with the rock. 2-I am trying to avoid making every image too perfect.

YAW. If I had been 15 feet away, going from f/5 to f/8 would have increase the d-o-f in front of the point of focus (the eye) about 1 inch. I do think that we may have been a lot closer... Ah, just checked: 12.3 feet. About the same.
