    Default Multifloral Hummingbird

Nikon D7000 w/Nikkor 80-400mm vr lens @ 260mm, tripod mounted and manually focused
    Camera in manual mode; ISO 400; f/18, 1/250sec; - 0.67 EC
    SB-800 strobe illumination w/four SB-26 optical slaves
PS CS5 levels and curves; no crop, as originally framed

A while ago I posted images of male and female ruby-throated hummingbirds at single Monarda flowers. In those posts the birds and single flowers substantially filled the frame.

Among responses elicited by those posts was a suggestion to make the bird smaller, and to provide multiple flowers in the image. That is what I've done here.

All comments and suggestions are welcome.

Norm, I like the image design, it does look lovely with all the flowers but I may have opted for less flower but that is a personal preference. The image is a little dark and flat I took it into LR and adjusted the contrast and lighting and I liked it a lot more.

    Thanks Denise.

I too prefer less flower and frankly like the closer single flower images better. But I wanted to see what more flowers and a smaller bird might look like.

Norm....lovely image....I like the number of flowers....but do agree that you should consider some lightening of the image. Also, I think it would look great with a texture overlay!

Beautiful image, Norm. I like the multiple flowers and bird smaller in the frame - emphasizes how tiny they are - but I could also imagine somewhere in between this and your earlier post; tighter crop and one less flower, for example. But I'd be thrilled with this. Great wing position and HA.

Very nice Norm, maybe selectively lighten the bird a tad, looks like your holding out a bouquet for him to eat.

A well balanced comp, and I like the inclusion of all the flowers. I feel the HB is just the right size in the frame, with a lovely hovering pose. Nice and sharp too.

Looks great, as presented, on my monitor. One flower/lots of flowers either way. Nice sharp bird and I really like the wing position and detail. For a change of pace, I do like the design of this image and the flower color/BG works very nicely.

Norm, count me among the ones that like this one more than the close-ups. absolutely beautiful image design. some lightening and a sharper bird will take this to the next level. Well done on this one. loved it.

    Thanks everyone for your feedback!!

In the future, I'll look at other types and numbers of flowers to find good setups. What I like about this kind of hummingbird photography is that you can really use your imagination, both in the setup and in post-processing.

As an example of the latter, I've revised the image in PS a bit, to eliminate some of the green parts of the flowers, and to better emphasize the blossoms. Just another example of what can be done.
