    Default Willet on Assateague

Took this on the beach on Assateague Island (barrier island off Maryland/Virginia) where I went on a camping trip with my family a couple weeks ago. Maybe a 50% crop, noise removal, sharpening, curves work. Light was fairly harsh but I did what I could.
In PP (CS4), I had a devil of a time with the color on this, I am not sure I have it right. I kept adjusting it, but it always looked too red, or too green, or too yellow. Tempted to do it as a black and white! Would love to hear what others think of the color and how true it appears to the delicate coloring of the Eastern willet.
All C and C greatly welcome and appreciated! thanks so much for looking, I hope you like it.

Hi Melissa. I think I've seen this fellow on the beach at Assateague. I like the walking pose, HA, nice clean BG and exposure. And position in the frame. In short, a fine Willet. But he does seem to have a pretty red cast on my screen. I've taken the liberty to repost, using the Correct Color Cast eyedropper on the bright spot on his neck, which makes the whites more neutral. Of course, the cast might be really as you saw it, especially in very early or late light, but to my eye this looks more willet-colored. I also boosted the USM just a tiny bit.

Thanks so much for doing that, Bill, that is a definite improvement! Appreciate the tip. I also realized I should try the Average Blur Color Balance Technique that Artie always talks about, and referred to my Digital Basics file to do that. This is what I came up with when I did it that way. They look very similar, don't you think?
Funny about how you might know the same individual! You know, in our 4 days there, it seemed like all I saw--at least on the beach--was that willet, a couple American oystercatchers, lots of mockingbirds catching crabs, and scads of laughing gulls! Oh and some terns and pelicans in the distance over the water. I had been hoping for more shorebirds but I know spring and fall migration are much more productive for bird photography there. Didn't make it to Chincoteague unfortunately...

Good low perspective Melissa, and I like the walking pose. Overall sharp, and against a lovely clear BG.
