    Default Northern Gannet taking off.

I shot this image from the wharf of Perce on a stormy day. It was so bad that no boats went out to the Island during this first day of my trip.
I had difficulties hand holding the 500 on the target, as the wing gusts moved it in my hands.
    Thanks for looking.

I like the pose, they are really attractive birds.
The hues in the water are a bit distracting to me, probably true to the colors, but my eye keeps getting drawn to the green on the left.

You've captured a nice expression on him, Karl. He appears to have given up and thrown up his hands :)
I like the waves and the details on the body. I'd sharpen the head more and try to get more details in the yellows on his head.

Very nice! Of course, I am one of those who feel you can't go wrong with a gannet. I am not sure but does it need just a bit of CCW rotation? My settings must be off because I can't see the whole image at one time, I need to scroll, but it looks like a bit of rotation is in order. Otherwise, very nice....handholding...with the 2X....really, it is just sick!

Kudos to you for getting out in bad weather. I love the raised wings and the bulging chest. I believe that the whole thing could go a bit brighter and that a bit more room on our right would help (but I doubt that you have more there....)

    Karl,

Good job, making a tough image in tough conditions.

Nice capture Karl...It really is tough to handhold 500 mm and with 2X you did a great job...

Jeez, I missed the part about the 500 and the 2X. Pretty impressive.

    Thanks Artie.
I'm pretty sure I have more room since a cropped it tighter for posting.
I'll post a less tight and brighter one later.

I 'm not sure. I have no idea if it was horizontal or not as it happens almost always when I shoot from hand. Then I usually have a clue, a landmark or a shoreline and can fix it in PP.
    but not this time.

Good landing pose Karl, with the wingspread, and I like the colour and detail on the head. A little more room on the right will work better.

Sorry Artie, I did not remember right. I had to start form the RAW file and reprocess it.
    Here is the result.
I think I solved some of the problems you mentioned (space brightness) but might have created new ones.
    Here it is.
    Thank you.

The room on the right was much needed. My pano crop here yields the best COMP balance for me. I almost always like more room above than below....

For brightness I pinned the upper part of the curve and then lightened the rest.

I forgot to sharpen the bird. Used Unsharp Mask at about 200/.3 and then added a hide-all Layer Mask and painted away all but the white parts of the bird. All as described in detail in Digital Basics.

Wow this looks superb Artie...How did you retain the Copyright watermark in repost even after cropping most of the bottom?

Wow, Artie, I had a good picture before, now I have a great picture,
    thanks to you.
I can see that it is a good idea to order the Digital Basics to improve my PP. skills.
I'm OK with PP. I guess, but there is always a lot to learn.

I put it on its own layer via a Quick Mask and then moved it into place after cropping. I added a Layer Mask and erased some of the sloppy/non-matching water. It looks OK in the JPG but that is about it :).
