I sent this image to Wildbird as an entry in the Shorebird catagory for this years contest. I would have never posted it here as I feel many would have commented on all the negative space. I composed it this way as I wanted it to represent the vastness of the habitat that this tiny bird must survive in. I think I got the point across as it won 1st place , so ya just never know.
I love it as is. Mazel tov to you and to the birds for surviving at all. You achieved your goal of depicting the vastness quite well.

well done on winning, and well done for taking a beautiful image, love the blade of grass, nice birds, like the chick with its wings up,nice colors.thanks.
I like the pose of the chick and the intimacy in here.
Light angle wasn't optimal. I don't see the need for a square presentation with all this space at the top. A nicely balanced pano crop with enough space on top could have conveyed the desired sense of vasteness of habitat IMO.
Your image tells a story. The wing position of the chick is just too cute! The single blade of grass is a wonderful bonus which really helps tell the story.
Excellent image ,Joe , and congratulations. It depicts very well the frailness of the little chick in this harsh wide world, and your message comes across very well.
Love it and Congratulations. I agree about your idea for the space but I might have taken a little off the top only and I think you still would have given the idea you were going for. I love the grass as well and the cute pose of the chick with mom looking back at you..
Just wanted to thank all for the kind, congratulatory words expressed. I think it fair to say that some of the things I learned here helped me create a winning image. Great bunch of people!!!!!
